Heather: (Visiting Audrey at Alpine) Hello, Mother, I am here in Rhode Island to visit you for the week end. How are you doing during your one week stay at Alpine Nursing Home?

Audrey: Where are you from now?

17 August 2002

Heather: Goodness, so many changes in your life. Now you are at Alpine for a one week respite. I am visiting you here, but I am still living in California.

August: I’m tired. I’ve lived a long time. I’m ready to go.

Heather: Hi Mother. I’m back in California so now we are returning to our telephone conversations. Tell me. How would you describe your life?

Audrey Mae MacDonald

Audrey: Most of my life my head was just above the water, not under it or above it. You don’t stew, stew and stew and stay healthy! I’m feeling good now. Don’t feel bad at all! Everything is green and quiet as I look out my window.

Martin is happy. He drops in every once in a while.

I heard that we need to read a book at least three or four times before you can really understand it. I’m reading Pride and Prejudice now.

Heather: What is it like at Crystal’s house?

Audrey: My breakfast is fixed every morning. Ernie is a great cook. The cat, the dog and me are keeping house. Buddy (the dog) is enough! We get along good during the week! Crystal comes and goes, and, of course, Ernie is always working. Crystal takes care of the four babies every Wednesday morning. She comes home tired, but she loves to care for them.

Heather: Well, what have you been doing this week?

Audrey: We had a big holiday. Croquet ball and throwing ball! It was a busy day. Now I’m tired. I feel like lying down. I feel kind of lazy. It’s raining here. It’s not cold. I guess I’ll read. I read different books at the same time. Wherever  I’m sitting I have a book and I pick it up and read. Anne of Green Gables is the book that is here by me now.

Heather: What are the animals up to?

Audrey: Buddy, he is under a big umbrella, and he shakes to get the water off him.  The cat sleeps 18 hours a day. I guess the cat is bored.  I’m feeling fine. No pains.  No aches. Looking out the window, there are no birds in the rain.

Heather: What are you doing today?

Audrey: I’m reading a novel by Max Brand called The Galloping Danger. It is in large print. It’s a library book. As I’ve told you, we need to read a book over three times. The first time we read the book, we only get a bit. It takes three to four readings to really understand the book.

Amber comes over and takes me for a ride and trips to the beach. I’m having a wonderful time. I like riding around! I hope to see Violet (Kettelle). Everything going along. The children are growing up and starting to run around. They are cute, little kids.

Heather: Mother, you grasp a lot more information then most people do.

Audrey: Brenda was here. She is bound and possessed she will get better. I hope to God she does.  Dawn comes over for pizza today at 3 PM. Haven’t seen Doreen’s house. I guess she will have a “House Warming”.  Michelle’s house is pretty. It is painted yellow.  She and Jessica live on the same street where Dad’s older brother Robert and his wife Gladys used to live. That Jessica, she is a runner.

There was a lawn party at Spencer’s. Ten or twelve played croquet ball throw. Brian (Jr.) was working all the time. He has a car. Has a license and can drive with someone else in the car. He is a nice boy.  He is a good worker. He is going to be a fine person. Meagan is active and Mathew Spencer, they go on a school bus.
